Yes, BA have been very good with compensation when my backpack was bent banana shape and ripped apart somewhere between FCO, LHR, LGW and AMS.
I agree that lots of bubble wrap is about as good as you can get. Also, if the bag is heavy there is more chance of bad handling. Everyone likes to handle light weight bags.
