MIA offers great connections to S America from most of the country, including LAX, SFO and SEA, as well as many other cities.
I'm a U.S. frequent traveler to South Florida; Miami and South Florida are playgrounds for an ever-increasing South and Central America upper and middle classes. As you say there is a huge MIA O&D - it's a natural gateway for these areas.

Usually I'm into FLL ,MCO, or SFB; the last time I flew into MIA was in 2001 and it was (WAS is the operative word) a dump. My inderstanding is that MIA is just completing a mulit-billion dollar upgrade and is now quite nice.

MIA will be status quo or growing.
