Do we have the same rules for our immigration officers too I wonder...so must be UK nationals only for all grades of officer?
Yes, UK immigration officers must be British citizens.
Perhaps the logic is that if you are guarding something you don't really care about, you might not do your job properly. Ex-police or ex-army have already demonstrated service to their country, and are therefore more likely to uphold the immigration laws.
