My treatment as a Platinum was not as generous. My rate included an upgrade to a lakeview room and free valet parking. Before I arrived, I saw that I had been upgraded to a junior suite, but other suites were showing available for sale.

When I arrived, I used the self-parking (less of a hassle) and checked in. I was told that I had been upgraded to a suite with a king bed. I asked if that was the best available room, and I was told it was. I was not given vouchers for breakfast. I was told that I had a choice between the 500 points or a continental breakfast as my welcome amenity. I took the points.

I got to the room (2145) and it was basically a junior suite--a room with an alcove that contained the bed. It was a nice room with a balcony and nice view of the lake and hills. I checked the SPG website, and many different types of suites were available: executive, grand, presidential, and villas. I understand that some of these were probably not available for upgrade, but surely the executive and grand would have qualified, wouldn't they? I chose not to pursue it.

When I checked out, there was a $22 resort fee. When I asked if it was waived for Plats, the agent at the desk said "No" and showed what it included. I explained that everything on the list was something that I should have had as a Plat (high-speed internet, which was not high-speed) or did not use (intra-resort transportation, storage of golf bags, or self-parking, because my rate included valet). The agent said that wifi was not included for Plats that this property. I told her that it was at all, and she said they had "opted out" of including it. I persisted, and she finally waived it as a "one-time exception." It took her awhile to change my final bill and typed quite a bit. I guess she noted in my record that I would never be able to get this waived again?

No worries, because I won't go back. Contrast this with my stay at the much-maligned Westin Las Vegas. I was told that I would be entitled to 2 of 3 amenities: 500 points, buffet breakfast at Suede, or a wine glass. At check-out, the amenity tax (formerly "resort fee") was waived without asking.

I'll take the Westin Las Vegas over the Westin Lake Las Vegas any day.
