In case it proves useful to someone else in the future, I can confirm that check-in staff at CPT are quite happy to accept checked bags only as far as LHR rather than through to one's ex-EU starting/finishing point.

I also confirmed there is no rule to the opposite, contrary to what other surly check-in agents have suggested.
