I'm considering driving from Uluru to Alice Springs via Kings Canyon. Good idea? bad? Do I need to rent a 4WD to do this, or will a standard car suffice? I found this online:

Kings Canyon to Alice Springs via Stuart Highway - 461km (about 4.5-hour drive, travelling on a sealed road)

Kings Canyon to Alice Springs via Mereenie / Larapinta Loop Road - 320km (about 3.5-hour drive, unsealed road for 198km) [NOTE: I looked at a couple youtube videos. While this would be my desired route, as we can then see Hermansburg on our way into Alice Springs, it looks very ambitious for a 2WD car.]

Kings Canyon to Alice Springs via Ernest Giles Road - 330km (about 3.5-hour drive, unsealed road for 70km)

Thoughts?
