Dear OP - you are right in your observation. Personally, I'd say transcons typically get the best value, followed by international.

For me in 2012, using an average spend of 5.3cpm, I paid 76k*0.053 = $4,028 to get Altitude E75 status for this year.

My takeaway from 2012 - 500mi minimums are your friend :-:
