Currents mainly, there was little chance they would be able to go against any of the currents.

Why didn't Carnival buy blocks of hotel rooms IN MOBILE for the passengers?
As I posted yesterday, the mayor of Mobile asked the same thing yesterday afternoon, saying they have more than enough hotel rooms and two airports near the terminal. Honestly, though, if you have ever been to Mobile, I would bet some of the people would want to get back on the ship if that was what they were offered.

I totally disagree. This could have been handled significantly better by Carnival, and they could have actually shown some concern instead of just taking in a basketball game. It's not all about just getting home safe, it's about how everybody was treated during the episode, including family members here. Carnival could have, and should have handled this completely differently. Yes it's great they are back, and I'm not sure they are safe, but only time will tell if there's any disease outbreak because of the conditions.
