Strangely, at the same time, in the UK the public had the opposite perception. It had penetrated through beyond the aviation world to the general public that the reason behind the Comet 1 disasters (which were a national fascination for years afterwards) was metal fatigue that developed from the corners of square-cut windows and other openings. The Comet 4 had everything rounded, as did other types that followed - the Handley Page Herald made a particular feature of this. So in the UK, no desire for windows to look square at all.
