Another strategy is to try to have at least one endpoint of the journey fall earlier or later than this holiday period, which helps somewhat. I've often flown Asia-USA around December 10 and return on December 26-27.
generally agree- would add that there are often pockets of 1 or 2 days where the flights are significantly cheaper than the other days; this year we went lax-nrt-tpe-lax on 16 Dec, 19 Dec, then 25 Dec. Moving any of those dates +/- 1 day resulted in fares 75%-100% more...
