Hi, QF newbie here, getting ready to book some
domestic flights within Australia, and this thread caught my eye.
We'll be going scuba diving on the GBR, and need to bring along our dive gear, in addition to normal stuff for land-based tourist activities. So I expect we (me and the wife) will each have
two bags to check. Each bag will be no more that 23kg and not excessively large. I assume we get one checked bag included with our ticket, and for the 2nd checked bag we will need to pay - and pay in advance to avoid penalty. This thread definitely made my eyes pop out a bit, so I wanted to seek clarification...
If I am reading the
Qantas Prepaid Additional Baggage web page correctly (not sure if I am), it does not look too bad, at least for our situation:
$20 per piece (if purchased before 26 February 2013), or
$21 per piece (if purchased after 26 February 2013)
This is for domestic flights, entirely within Australia, in Economy.
At least, that's what the chart appears to indicate to me.
Am I reading this wrong?
I have not booked our domestic Australian flights yet (we will be flying in and out of Australia on a separate ticket, award seats booked on non QF partners, so we won't benefit from the fact that we're arriving from overseas). Since I don't have a booking yet, I can't do as they suggest on their website (
go to 'Manage your bookings' to see the actual prices we would be charged). If it's $21 per bag, that's fine. But if it's something huge...not so much.
Popping in and reading this thread today was a bit alarming, seeing fees over $1000 for an extra bag - I'm guessing that's for a flight between Australia and Europe. If the bag fees for us were going to be that high, I'd surely choose a different airline (or maybe not go at all!).
Am I misreading their chart or am I correct that the "extra bag fee" for domestic flights within Australia are a much-more-reasonable $20 or $21 per bag (as long as you stay below 23kg)?
Thanks for helping me understand what I'm about to get myself into.
