I haven't done this yet, but I live near a London Overground station and realised once that I could get the overground to Richmond (about 25 mins), and then the 490 bus from outside the station straight to Heathrow T5 (about 45 mins).

It wouldn't take that much longer than doing Paddington + HEX, and would only cost a few quid.
