Since you do not get any GPU for being Gold, you must be 1K of GS to get them; I assume your GPU is sponsored by a 1K or GS which means that when you are placed on the waiting list, you inherit the status of the person that gave you the GPU.
At least this was the way it used to be on Continental which I assume is still the way it is on UA
