I think the point was to get the Five Star service to assist him with a connection, which could be at JFK or ORD or LAX, after getting off an AA flight and connecting to CX. It would be $200 each leg. Not 100% sure whether the service includes making connections to a partner, and of course your point about just buying the nonstop instead of paying $400 + miles for this is valid.
