Emirates is notoriously strict about check in times, and I don't think their phone support staff is the same as US carriers. But, it seems to me that it would be better to save at least 5 hours each way in travel time in addition to avoiding UA's 2-4-2 seating J by simply showing up 2 hrs ahead of time or checking in online.
