From Central London, I tend to use Simply Airports or similar, or a black cab. More expensive, but I hate that faffing about with luggage in tube and train stations.
Having said that, unless you're really close to Paddington, I never saw much point in the HEX. And yes, rail travel in the UK is scandalously expensive for what remains an outdated and slow service.

In fairness, I can't quite understand why anyone would want to use the tube for that connection, it's far more convenient
and faster to walk it!
