This is true. While going you will check in based on AA rules. While coming back though 9W rules apply. 3 weeks ago, I had a connection from HYD-MAA-LHR-ORD. MAA-LHR-ORD was in business, but HYD-MAA was in Jet Konnect, economy. The 9W rep was not even allowing me to check in 2 suitcases even though everything was else in Business.
