Since I get E+ for free, I've never seen the process for E+ purchase, when you drag your mouse over the seats do different prices come up? (that's what I've seen on USAir's website)
Ya learn something new every day...
Try a dummy booking without logging in, see what happens. (or can you only select E+ seats / upsell after booking?)
The fact that UA has E+, and is rolling it out fleet-wide, continues to be a big asset for them from my perspective.
The fact that they allow me to upgrade 8 people to E+ based upon my elite status at no charge is another excellent elite benefit.

I am neither tall nor wide so E- is tolerable but really do appreciate E+ for those ORD-SFO and ORD-SNA segments especially when you luck out and get the E+ middle open because most people will stay in E- aisle/window over taking a middle.
Now if I actually ever had to fly UA on TPAC or TATL, I am sure I would value my Silver status a lot more highly than I do - still only doing 60% on UA as AA/WN are often more convenient and/or better priced out of ORD/MDW.
If you stay on top of your reservation (monitor it closely), do you find that prime E+ seats open up as higher level elites get upgraded?
Perhaps check for new E+ seats at the 1K, PP, and 1P upgrade windows?
