Is maintaining status addictive?

I was just halfway through booking flights in the current luxury seat sale and suddenly thought 'why?'.
My year end is May and for some reason all sensible, logical and practical thoughts go out of the window and I'm obsessed with trying to gain the few additional tier points required to maintain Gold.
I only travel for pleasure and pay for all my own flights or use Avios. Always travel Club or First long-haul so get lounge access anyway. I've got Priority Pass and Airport Angel cards that have never been used, they'd do for ET flights (except leaving T5).
Thinking logically, I don't need status. So why do I have to stop myself from booking a 'bargain' LCY-JFK trip just 2 weeks before a planned holiday to South Africa? I find myself trying to justify booking as it's in the sale, extra tier points, always wanted to try the 001 flight - but I don't really need to go.
I think it's the thought of the tier points already accrued going to waste. Might just stop looking at my account for a few months and go cold turkey!
