I've never flown much on Star Alliance airlines or collected their points, but one return biz class flight to London-Venezuela and a bit of research beforehand on which FF program to join means I now have Star Alliance Gold status with Aegean.

However Thai Airlines or maybe SQ are the only Star Alliance partners which are of any use to me for personal travel.

are there any other benefits if I turn up at a Thai or Singapore check-in booked in economy, Gold card in hand? Are any op-ups likely to happen? Can you do paid upgrades on either carrier at check-in?
