Is it a direct flight? Often times DL will only make higher fares available on a direct route, while connecting flights can book at lower fares. This is especially true on hub to hub routes.

Try doing a random arbitrary search for a flight that runs through your two cities, but is part of a 1-stop flight. For example try DTW-SMF and look at the flights that stop in SLC.
