No event, just cherry blossom season. Kyoto always gets full and room rates always go up during that time, which is their "high season." I've gotten good deals in April but had to book nearly a year in advance. Last April I gave up on Kyoto and booked a reasonable room in Nara and then commuted to Kyoto.
