I've been less than gracious? At this risk of causing this to move to OMNI P/R, I think I've been gracious, in that my tax dollars have been going to help the OP stay in hotels. I did point out that the OP was not quite clear as to if they wanted to stay in DC or NY, and then I commented that just because asbestos was discovered in the building does not mean that the landlord was intentionally hiding it or was doing anything wrong.
