I may be dense, but aren't there two separate things going on in this thread?
The OP referred to the "new AMEX Plat with the chip in it" which (I believe) is the US-issued chip-and-signature card. Then we had reclusive46 comment on experience with the British-issued card, which (I believe) is a chip-and-pin card, which led to a discussion about how holders of British-issued cards approach the need to enter a 5 digit zip.
The issue closest to me is the one where US-issued cards with the chip don't work at all in some gas station pumps. If that is the case, I plan on not activating the card they sent me until this gets sorted out. If however we get a lot of people saying their US-issued EMV-chipped card works fine in gas pumps and other "dip" machines, I will probably conclude some cards have a dodgy chip rather than it being a systemic issue.
I don't know whether the chip in British-issued cards is coded differently from the new US-issued cards that have chips, but if it is then that may account for why it is accepted at US gas station pumps (assuming you can work out the zip code thing) while the US-issued card is struggling.
Can anyone straighten me out?
