15 hours + probably 12 or 13 hours of flying time, that's nuts.
These reward programs really suck, especially this star alliance one.
whats the point of having these miles if nothing is ever available, or if it is you have to make extra stops all over the place. I would rather fly economy direct than business with extra stops.
virgin atlantic is about equally bad with miles.
only airlines I ever seem to have had success redeeming miles on are delta and air france.

do i have to play chicken and wait until 1 to 3 weeks before I fly to actually book? is that how getting business class on star alliance typically works?
Welcome to FT and rest assured you won't be making many friends here with such opinionated and incorrect posts...
I am regularly redeeming on *A without many problems. I am even getting seats on SQ’s A380 in business which some people claim is impossible… The trick is to redeem well ahead. Like 300 days ahead… Or last minute…
And yes, you have to be more flexible with award bookings. For example, shortest possible layover in SIN on my upcoming FRA-SIN-MEL is 5 hours, but I had to take 8 hours since I could not get seats on the earlier flight… Still worth…
