Like I said I had too much faith in my MileagePlus credit card and its travel protections. I thought this card enabled you to not be penalized if you cancel the trip.

You all speak of high morals and such, meanwhile you have a whole forum dedicated to fraud, manufactured spending, exploitation of loopholes and other civil crimes. Flyertalk of all places, knows how to bend/break/disobey the rules. It is a shame you think you are above this, because you are guilty by association. Flyertalk is the place that will exploit companies until the rules/processes/etc are changed.

I know you will say you don't promote it, just like how club owners don't promote drug use...but it goes on anyways.

Let's say your knee wasn't injured. Would you have been OK with it if upon trying to check-in, United said, "Oh, sorry. Since your promotional code was improperly applied, we canceled your booking. Because the promo code wasn't valid, your original ticket was invalid, so if you want to fly, you have to pay the walk-up fare (and not just pay the $100 difference -- since, after all, the booking was invalid to begin with)."? If not, I don't see how you can possibly argue that they should cancel it now on your behalf for that same reason. Once it ticketed, you expected it to be honored. You can't have it both ways.
