HK customs rarely opens anything, even if you have lots of bags. They know which pax are coming from which flights and especially for US arrivals inspection is not a likely prospect.

The normal HK routine is to walk out of customs without questions being asked, and without bags being scanned.

As others have mentioned, you need to clear customs but can just go up one escalator to get to departures and dump your bags again.
