Nice try, but it won't work on Southwest. :-)

Because they do not pre-assign seats, you have to check in with an agent for the extra seat. The agent will determine eligibility and if s/he is happy that you fall into one of the two categories, you will be given a "RESERVED" sign to place on the seat next to you. It is highly unlikely that the agent will let you slip by with this type of story. The most likely outcome will be to forfeit the amount you paid for the extra ticket...
