You're missing the fact that this system makes it impossible for anyone, even on LAT fares to u/g for post Mar1 flights unless you managed to score some 2014 eupgrades at the end of the year. I lost out on an HNL flight with (at the time lots of R space) because of this. And as a result I switched from LAT to a much cheaper Flex fare.
