IMO, the complainer won't be satisfied until her friend gets charged for her guest too............then both will have been charged equally.......of course her friend may not be as happy, but at least the complainer will........

I think that's a fair question. If both are Gold and both have 1 person listed in their room reservation, I would want to know why I was being charged if my colleague wasn't. As you said, you didn't mind paying for the guest. That's not the issue. What is the issue is that the policy needs to be enforced uniformly - ie, either all get charged for extra guest or none do. Randomness of policy isn't appropriate (although typical Marriott, even in Shanghai it seems).
