I should have been clearer from my first message.
The flight starts at 6am in SF and has me arriving at noon in Paris. (with a 4.5 huor layover in DUS)
I then get myself to Madrid and work my way to BCN. Then my ticket gets me to AMS via frankfurt for a three day stopover before going back to Frankfurt and then on to SFO.
So in addition to the first trip, im getting a stopover in AMS.
But those flights are cheap anyhow! If only I could get a direct sfo-cdg and ams-sfo, that would be ideal. Im trying to learn how to use expertflyer to setup alerts for those flights on United.
Ok that's a little clearer. Are you trying to book (via UA.com):
SFO-CDG //
AMS-FRA (stop)
FRA-SFO
?
If so, if you post some sample dates I'm sure some people will have some ideas of how best to achieve that in C on a saver award. There are literally a dozen ways to do SFO-CDG with 1-stop and UA even has a direct flight. Likewise on the return there are a load of 1-stop options and one non-stop. There should be no need to do a two stop on such a simple itinerary.
With UA awards you can also waitlist on UA metal, so it would be worth booking the indirect and then waitlisting the direct in both directions.
