There are so many different views and experiences mentioned, and there seems to be no consistency on what BW hotels in general are offering their loyal and valued elite tier customers. What can I request (or rather expect to be offered), and be certain to get (upgrades, bonus award points accrual, other perks etc.), and does my home country or the location of the property, decide which parts of the list of tier benefits that applies in this regard? Or should I simply just try to status match to another chain with clearer and more concise elite membership benefit offerings?

You can get anything from "nothing" (e.g. at the BW hotels around Frankfurt main station) to nice suite upgrades (e.g. at the BW Shinjuku Astina in Tokyo). Sometimes there are also some nice extras like a fruit plater (e.g. in the BW West in Bratislava or in the BW Weisses Kreuz in Bregenz).
Sometimes they give you points for 3rd party bookings (e.g. in the BW hotels in Warsaw) or they give you no points at all for such bookings (e.g. in the BW hotels around Frankfurt main station).
A consitent benefit is certainly free Internet (or is this for all guests included in all BW hotels?).
BW run often nice promos, while other chains have only inferior offers.
Over all, got used to the BW diamond status.
