Selecting your seats as soon as possible will help ensure (to the extent irregular operations, aircraft changes, etc. don't happen, so keep an eye on the bookings,) you sit together.
Maybe its me, but I've never seen any value in 'linking'. When a friend and I were on separate but linked PNRs and ran in to IRROPs we were rebooked on to diff flights. Maybe it was because they had no status vs my EXP status, but linking didn't seem to help there.
As for OPs seats - Even with diff locators you can still both pick seats. if you have status and they don't you can call AA to be seated together based on your status.
