I believe Chase gives you 90 days after the annual fee to cancel the account and get your fee back. I'm not sure how kosher it is, but technically, you can just pay your bill, and then get a refund later after your trip.

Thank you for contacting Chase regarding your United MileagePlus® credit card account.
Please be advised that as long as you close your account within two months of the annual fee being charged to your account, we can credit your account the $85.00 annual fee. If you close your account after the two month time frame, we are unable to credit your account for the annual fee.
