I live in a place with universal health care. If some idiot wants to ride in a car without a seatbelt or on a motorcycle without a helmet, fine. But they then don't get the luxury of me paying, via my taxes, for the medical care for their catastrophic injuries because they wanted to exercise those freedoms when it has been proven beyond any doubt that wearing that seatbelt/helmet would have saved them from those injuries or at least made them far less severe. You can't have it both ways. You want to be reckless and flaunt safety, then you pay the price, both literally and figuatively.
And yes, I know there are hundreds of examples you can name where medical care is provided for self inflicted things; smoking, extreme sports etc. But as long as those things are legal, that's the way it is. You can't regulate everything in life and the vast majority of citizens ride in cars but don't base jump or race motorcycles so the laws are there to protect the majority. Those seatbelt laws were brought in for a reason - they save lives and prevent serious injury.
