I'm not sure of the logistics at YVR, but I'm DTW based & when we drove to visit friends in Toronto we stopped at YYZ for the iris scan. The Nexus office at YYZ is outside security/customs (so we could just walk in, no problem), you don't need an appointment for just an iris scan, and the whole process for me & my wife took 5 minutes (granted they weren't busy on a Friday afternoon in December).
