Question... Is there any disadvantage to getting the status-match?

I can't see myself flying often on SkyTeam (although, there's a possible AeroMexico trip coming up next month). Just wondering if taking the status match but not making big use of it could preclude me from status-matching again at a later date. Or worse, is surrender of my NZ GE status part of the deal?
