Upgrading you costs AC the ability to see that seat to an actual J paying pax/LMU buyer. It would only cost AC nothing if you were willing to play gate lotto for all your upgrades.
In regards to T fares for TB/int'l, I've never understood why people are upset about 50% credit. Most of the airlines in the rest of the world (minus the US), do not give 100% credit to their cheap fares. The US is the exception, not the norm.
