In H1 2012 I started to use SWU/GPUs. They worked fine if they cleared greater than 24 hours, but if they didn't clear I was not being added to the waitlist at the airport. This went on for multiple international flights, I'd pay more for W+ and then the gate agents would say I was really on the list but it was just a display error as they see I used a GPU, don't worry it will all be just fine.. the 1K line said talk to the gate agent... they never cleared.

The problem turned out that my Mileageplus name was First Middle Last BUT BECAUSE my passport was First Middle Last my Mileageplus name should have been FirstMiddle Last. The explanation was that the upgrades move over to the airport system at 24 hours and it does it by matching the travelers name with the mileageplus name. So the agent made the change and now it works as advertised. (interestingly I complained about this being a bug in UA's system and was told I should have entered my name in correctly when I set up my mileageplus account... sigh, sometimes it's just not worth it...) I'm not 100% convinced this was the problem, yes it worked, but really...

So, now this update comes along and I'm back to First Middle Last. I have a GPU on waitlist for a march flight I paid extra for W class.

I called the 1K line and talked to the agent at the United Club this week, I'm not even sure they know about United changing the names...

What now... do I change back to FirstMiddle Last?
