If she was living in 2011 she was right ;-) That rule changed at LEAST a year ago, though it did used to be the case.

You will clear at the window and your companion would clear at, I believe, 24 hours before the flight.

Even if you are on an award, a companion on a coach (paid) fare is eligible for your companion upgrade (as long as you are GM or higher).
