Recalculating to 1600 eur while new ticket costs 700 eur is not the sign of being competent isnt it?
It's a sign of (rightly) wanting to make you suffer for a ticket you didn't pay anywhere close to the value.
It was their fault, they are honoring it, but honestly you should know that in these situations you should NEVER expect to be able to change the ticket and get away with a (heavy) recalculation of fare.
