call and ask. do not try to sneek people in. we once had a suite at the Danieli, went to another wing of the hotel to have a glass of prosecco with friends in another suite (all on points), and got a knock on the door not five minutes after we arrived.

i have noticed an increase in number of rooms allowing 4 or 5 or 6 in both italian and french hotels of late. venere.com has a pretty good people count per room feature.

the law limiting people in a room is often quoted in italy. i have not seen it, and could not read it if i had it, but i do believe it. the charge for 3rd or more people is at the discretion of the hotel.

phone calls(not on cell phones) are quite inexpensive from usa to italy.
