Just out of interest, on the confirmation of the upgrade, it says:
'Upgrade From Commercial Class With SME Points'
What does that mean?
SME points sounds like On Business points. I think the system may be confused somewhere.
There should be a very clear Conditions box that appears on the POUG screen that tells you the new fare conditions when you upgrade with money. Did you see anything like that appear?
It's been a while since I did a long haul POUG but I regularly POUG an ET to CE, and with it appears a very clear box showing the new fare conditions. I am assuming that this is also what happens with long haul POUG. I find that BA tends to be very good at showing you the fare condition changes in POUG.
HOWEVER, from what I have read recently, the following *may* apply - warning, it's a second hand anecdote!
- If you want to change your flight after long haul POUG, you forfeit the additional money paid for the POUG
- However, you can still change the flight with the original fare conditions
So, you may lose the £550, downgrade to CW, and pay £200 change fee, in order to change you flight.
Try calling BA again and see if this may be the case?
