The non-M&S tires are speed-rated performance tires i.e. if anybody in the US wants to buy non-M&S tires to save money thinking that the M&S tires have something special about them that makes them cost more, they're clueless.

Standard tires is what the quote says, and that's incorrect. The standard is M&S, if standard means what most people think of: most common, least exotic, least expensive.

So back to the OP, unless you think a Corvette or Mercedes AMG or similar super high performance car is appropriate for a ski trip, I guarantee the rental car will have M&S tires. I live in the US, go skiing every weekend, and know about tires.
