The kiosk only lets you do it if you did not do online check in. If you don't check in online and you arrive early it will give you the option to move up to an earlier flight.
In my one and only experience it even let me choose a F seat since one was available. I don't know how this would work if there are no Y seats available.
Generally, if I think I might move up I don't check in online. Yes, I know that I don't get put on the standby list but TBH I have never gotten a standby upgrade (although I have seen it happen).
I've gotten multiple standby upgrades (and was told by an agent that I lost one because someone checked in online and I didn't, which was how I learned that it was better for me to check in online). So to me it's still going to be worth the extra time waiting in the first class line rather than using the kiosk. But it's good to know in case I'm not able to check in online that I don't need to go to the first class line in order to get a possible move up to first class.
