I'm not too big into mobile technology, but I do travel to remote parts of the world on occasion and internet access is often best found over the cell networks. I know many FTers probably travel within the US too, where wifi is plentiful but often a paid extra at airports/hotels/etc.
I just wanted to post three nifty devices I found, all released in the past 6 months or so and each very innovative:
First up is the Huawei e355 3g/wifi hotspot (~$60):
It's a USB dongle with an integrated 3G modem. What distinguishes this from all the other 3G USB dongles, is that this one is actually a wifi router plus 3G modem. You can share the 3G connection with up to 5 wifi devices. It also has an internal SD card slot where you can share up to 32GB via ftp wirelessly. Basically this is a MiFi unit without the battery, instead drawing power from USB. Why is that useful? Well for one it's smaller/lighter than mifi units and also doesn't have a battery that degrades over time. For me it's useful as I don't need 3g for mobility (my phone has 3g for that) but instead for hotel rooms in places without internet. It would also work great as a car wifi hot spot. It's $60 on Amazon.com.
Also note you can add a cheap $20 portable battery pack to effectively turn this into a Mifi.
Second is the Asus WL-330NUL wifi router ($29):
This is basically just a tiny USB/ethernet dongle, and also has a wifi router built in. I carry an old Airport Express around to have a small router with me, but this device simultaneously fills the role of ultrabook ethernet adapter and also portable wifi router for hotel rooms. It's coming out next month, Asus has said the price will be $29 (
link). I've always wondered why there aren't any tiny routers as surely there is a market of business travelers who would use one, plus we know routers can be smaller than a phone.
Last is the Huawei e5151 mifi+ethernet/wifi router ($85-$110):
This basically combines the above two, with a battery pack as well. It's a mifi unit, with HSDPA+ radio and wifi antenna and built-in 5-hour battery. But it also has an ethernet jack and you can use it as a traditional wifi router from a LAN (again great for hotel rooms). I just ordered this for $85 shipped from China on aliexpress.com
