Ahh, that should be the way it works but just take a look at the difference UA is charging the fees if you just transit through LHR. There is a extra charge and been discussed on a different thread.
Not saying it's right, just standard practice for UA
UA erroneously charges this fee if you upgrade a ticket that includes a LHR-xxx segment.
They charge the correct fees if you're just transiting LHR and buying an award ticket in a premium cabin outright.
