The above advice is right if you didn't want to be active and alert on the day of arrival -- but you state that as a requirement. I have the same problem and fly LHR-LAX several times a year needing to be able to work an hour after arrival. This justifies paid F for my work, and I do the opposite of the above advice and it works well for me to completely avoid jet lag. I shift to west coast time 2 days before the flight and basically stay up all night before the flight (which leaves 11 am, so at LHR before 9). Then eat a big meal in the lounge, and drink lots of alcohol in the first 2 hours of the flight. After that sleep, which leaves about 8 hours sleep on board. Upon landing I am mostly on local time (slept in until noon) and acclimatized. Caveat is that I don't stay more than 2 or 3 days, and it does feel tiring by the third day. So this is definitely a short-term strategy, but very (very) effective. And I've tried just about everything. By not eating too much on board, you should be able to enjoy an evening meal on the ground later.
