You can also do a search on *A official website, then you will know as a *S that basically almost has no benefits whatsoever, as it is just really too easy to become a *S, I mean one long haul and a few mid-con already do the trick, any overseas studing student or gradmas would easily to get that status.

I received an upgrade from ANA on NRT-SFO as a general member, not even in their mileage program, but as a general United Mileage Plus member. I'm not sure exactly why it happened, but my sister who was also general at the time confirmed a Premium Economy seat at check-in (leaving me in Economy), and when at the gate, they called me up to upgrade me to Business. It could have been because I was on a higher fare class, but I have no clue why they chose me out of all other people on the flight.
High fare class will do the trick, years ago for my first ever UA flight, I was op up from Y to C on ORD-NRT, since that was my first ever UA flight, I had no status whatsoever, but I was on a H class ticket (4th from the top)
