Glad you enjoyed your Ryokan experience! I love the food they serve (most of the time. One time I really struck out with the food!) The experience, comfort, customs and cuisine absolutely makes staying at a Ryokan worthwhile.

One thing that I'd like to mention about Ryokans (and what I will say may be a little controversial)...

In Japan...tipping is not common and not expected.

However, for Ryokans, where you get personalized service, it is fairly common.

Whether you give a tip is up to those who visit...but as an sign of appreciation for the service that is usually received, I think it is worthwhile.

My (Japanese) wife and I were unsure of what to do when we first went to a Ryokan. But, we put some money (~4000 Yen=$40 for two nights) folded nicely in an envelope and gave it to her shortly after she showed us the room.

Based on her reaction, this was not at all uncommon.

We had a wonderful stay at the Ryokan. And maybe it would have been the same had we not given her a tip. But from the perspective of the amount of time that these hosts spend with guests, I feel it is well deserved.

Sorry to hijack this thread though
